The Stellated Icosahedra

چکیده

Stellation means the extension the faces of a polyhedron until they intersect with the extensions of other faces, such that the symmetry of the original polyhedron is preserved. The set of all possible edges of the stellated forms can be obtained by finding all intersections of the plane of one face with the planes of all other faces. No stellations are possible for the tetrahedron and the cube. The only stellation of the octahedron is the stella octangula, a compound of two dual tetrahedra. The two tetrahedra are related to each other by inversion and can easily be drawn.

Stellated Ag-Pt bimetallic nanoparticles: An effective platform for catalytic activity tuning

The usefulness of Pt-based nanomaterials for catalysis can be greatly enhanced by coupling morphology engineering to the strategic presence of a second or even third metal. Here we demonstrate the design and preparation of stellated Ag-Pt bimetallic nanoparticles where significant activity difference between the methanol oxidation reaction (MOR) and the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) may be re...

On Kepler's Small Stellated Dodecahedron

We give a new geometric computation for the Jacobian of the Riemann surface of genus 4 associated to Kepler’s small stellated dodecahedron. Starting with Threlfall’s description, we introduce several other flat conformal geometries on this surface which are related to holomorphic 1-forms. They allow us to show that the Jacobian is isogeneous to a fourfold product of a single elliptic curve whos...

On k-stellated and k-stacked spheres

We introduce the class Σk(d) of k-stellated (combinatorial) spheres of dimension d (0 ≤ k ≤ d+1) and compare and contrast it with the class Sk(d) (0 ≤ k ≤ d) of k-stacked homology d-spheres. We have Σ1(d) = S1(d), and Σk(d) ⊆ Sk(d) for d ≥ 2k− 1. However, for each k ≥ 2 there are k-stacked spheres which are not k-stellated. For d ≤ 2k− 2, the existence of k-stellated spheres which are not k-sta...

Relics of the Antarctic tundra

Many viruses have capsids that are icosahedra: 20-sided nearspheres with triangular faces. Chuan Zhang et al. have created icosahedra consisting purely of DNA, which self-assemble from five-pointed molecular tiles. The authors’ previous research with three-pointed tiles showed that triangular faces make extremely stable building blocks. In the present work, they designed fivepointed tiles using...

On stellated spheres, shellable balls, lower bounds and a combinatorial criterion for tightness

We introduce the k-stellated (combinatorial) spheres and compare and contrast them with kstacked (triangulated) spheres. It is shown that for d ≥ 2k, any k-stellated sphere of dimension d bounds a unique and canonically defined k-stacked ball. In parallel, any k-stacked polytopal sphere of dimension d ≥ 2k bounds a unique and canonically defined k-stacked (polytopal) ball, which answers a quest...
